Hissing AC Noises
Your air conditioner relies on a chemical called refrigerant to take hot air out of your home and replace it with cool, fresh air. Refrigerant travels through the tiny tubes in your AC system. If one of those tubes suffers any type of damage, you’ll likely have a refrigerant leak.
While it’s unlikely that you’ll see refrigerant leaking out of your air conditioner, you’ll hear the effects of the leak. The highly pressurized refrigerant will hiss as it leaks out of the line. Always leave refrigerant line repairs to professionals as it’s unsafe for you to handle the chemical without proper training.
Humming Noises
A soft, low hum coming from your air conditioner while it’s running is quite common. However, if that hum turns into something louder, you probably need to schedule air conditioner repairs. Loud, constant humming usually means that your evaporator coils have dirt on them and need a quick cleaning.
Rattling Noises
There is a multitude of causes for a rattling noise coming from your air conditioner. Some of them, such as a loose panel on the outside unit, are quite harmless and require that you tighten a few screws.
However, rattling noises can also mean that something is wrong with one of your air conditioner’s internal components. A broken or loose part vibrating against another part of the system not only produces an obnoxious sound but can also lead to extensive damage.
